2017 Commissioning

P1120911The Commissioning Ceremony is a time honored tradition which celebrates the beginning of the new sailing season. Huguenot Yacht Club held it’s “123rd Commissioning Ceremony” and dinner party on May 20, 2017, at 1700 hours (5:00pm). The morning weather was rainy, followed by a cloudy and cool afternoon. Fifteen minutes before the event was scheduled to begin, the clouds parted and the sun beamed down on a record topping number of 150 members including their guests. The club grounds looked fabulous with its floral burgee and flowering plants. 

Our Fleet Captain gave the commencement, welcoming all, and introduced our Fleet Chaplain, who delivered the blessing.  

Commodore John Scagnelli, acknowledged and thanked all for their selfless, all-consuming passion and knowledgeable contributions in the management of the club. The Commodore expanded on this theme of HYC successfully operating as a self-run-club and stated that without the Flag Officers, Board, Committee Chairs, Committee Members, and all volunteers, we would not be here celebrating our 123rd Commissioning. In keeping with the message, he presented special awards for exemplary service to five outstanding members.

As Flags were hoisted, the cannon boomed and the bugler sounded; our 2017 season officially opened.

The revelers rejoined to a beautifully decorated tent adorned with signal flags. The yellow rose and blue hydrangea flower arrangements atop blue and yellow table linens added to the fun atmosphere. Three bars were strategically placed, two inside and one outside the tent to accommodate the large crowd. All new members were given corsages so the membership could easily identify them and introduce themselves.


The band kicked off the cocktail hour, as members and guests kicked up their heels on the dance floor. Music and dancing went on into the (latish) night. Large platters of antipasto were placed on the buffet tables as hor d’oeuvres were passed around, followed by a scrumptious buffet. Dinner was capped by a lavish dessert table. Twas a great evening!
